Product Description

Valuable mish-mash in large box.  Includes various stockbooks (x2), albums (x5), stockpages, glassines, loose, etc.  Immense catalog value (probably $150,000-$200,000) with lots of saleable material.  The “bread and butter” of this group, and most of the catalog value, is 19th Century mint and used, which starts with two used Scott 9x1’s plus a used Scott 1 (dark brown shade, faulty,) many more 1851-57 issues perf and imperf (including 1c x18, an unused Scott 25, etc) 3c 1861’s (including several that approach pink), 70/78 (x30, many different shades including a few possibly better,) 72 (x10), grills that need identifying, 1869’s to 30c (x2), 133 (4 margins, guaranteed genuine,) banknotes to 30c (x19) and 90c (x10) with lots of lower denominations and some grills, used & unused Columbians including 50c mint OG (x2) plus $1 mint OG (faults,) bureaus to $1 (x3), mint & used Trans-Mississippi’s (w/ $1 mint OG faulty, also used 50c x4,) 294-299 (including probably 5+ complete sets,) mint 323-327 (x2), etc.  Quantities on most numbers range from a few to many dozens.

Back-of-book includes airmails (like mint C1-C6, the C3 being a “high plane” variety,) Special Delivery (with some nicer mint in the earlies,) Postage Due, many Officials (including a few specimens,) Revenues, Guam, stockpage of Hawaii, better Philippines (including $2 & $5 overprints,) Confederate States (mint and used,) binder of UN (sorry, no 38 but apparently everything else), etc.

For the specialists, there are a number of better/fancy cancels (including Scott 73 w/ green bullseye, numerous NYFM on the banknotes,) a few decent proofs/essays, locals (a few of which may actually be genuine,) Scott 73 revenue usage on document, Scott 35 on defective patriotic cover front, etc.

Condition is very mixed, ranging from filler to sound & superb.  An unorganized group of many thousands, no doubt a lot of work in store for the next owner.  However, the good news is that the (lack of) organization will almost certainly result in a number of surprises as you dig through this mess.  A great value and fun spring/summer project for the patient philatelist/dealer.  Happy hunting!

Expertization/Extension Policy

Any uncertified (single) stamp that I sell may be placed on "extension" while a certificate of expertization is obtained. In addition, stamps with existing certificates issued prior to January 1, 2015 may be placed on extension for a new certificate. Individual stamps from a larger lot may not be placed on extension, unless prior approval has been obtained. The following procedure must be followed for all extensions:

  • All lots must be paid for in advance and the lot will ship once payment clears. Upon receipt, please examine the item. If you agree with my description but want a certificate, then...
  • You must notify me (preferably at time of purchase) that you are requesting a certificate and we must agree on a 3rd party service (APEX, PF, PSAG and PSE are acceptable) to do the certification. This notification must occur within 7 days of receipt but in no event later than 30 days from the purchase date. The item must be submitted within 7 days of receipt, but in no event later than 30 days from the sale.
  • You submit the item as the rightful owner and pay any certification and postage costs required at that time.
  • If the item comes back with an opinion stating "not genuine", with a different identification (different Scott number), or with faults not originally described, you may return the lot and I will reimburse your purchase price plus the cost of the certificate (up to 20% of the purchase price or $100, whichever is lower). The stamp must not be marked in any way, and must be returned in the original condition (not encapsulated). Express service premiums are not reimbursable. Certificate costs are not refundable if the service cannot render an opinion, or if a graded certificate disagrees with any statement regarding grade or estimated grade.
  • Upon receipt of the returned stamp and certificate, I will credit your account (as defined in (4) above) within 24 hours. You can leave the money on account to apply toward future purchases, or request a refund, in which case funds will be sent within 2 business days.
