Details

A magnificent study of Scott 9 recut varieties.  All 8 recut types from plate 1L represented, and all stamps were hand-selected for soundness, attractiveness and light unobtrusive cancels allowing the recuts to be easily seen.  A fabulous study which could immediately become a page in an award-winning exhibit

Includes:

Recut 1x top 1x bottom example (most common, 113 positions on the plate) with huge margin at bottom showing the stamp below.

Recut 1x top only (40 on plate) with gem appearance, deep color and almost imperceptible cancel – gem!

Recut 1x top 2x bottom (21 on plate) with light cancel and large margin at bottom showing portion of the adjacent stamp.

Recut 2x bottom only (11 positions on plate) is represented by a PAIR with light cancels and huge margins at bottom showing portions of both adjacent stamps.  A pair with both stamps showing this scarce recut is difficult to obtain!

Recut 1x at bottom only (8 on plate), a large-margined single and 1992 PFC – gem!

Recut 2x top, 1x bottom (4 on plate), a single tied to piece by red carrier cancel, very attractive!

Recut 2x top, 2x bottom (only 2 on plate, both represented), 52L1L with jumbo margins top & right showing portions of 3 adjacent stamps and 79L1L with incredibly deep color and light CDS.  Finally, the

One position not recut at all (4R1L, rightfully listed as a Scott 7 variety), a fresh single with very light black cancel.

Each stamp could easily be offered on its own merit and I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say many of these would sell at double or maybe even triple catalog value.  However, obtaining a set showing all recut varieties is much more difficult than you’d think, especially in such nice condition and with the tough varieties like 52L1L, 79L1L and 4R1L.  Offered intact with the hope that it will inspire another collector to begin a specialized study of this challenging area!

Scott catalog value $1,625++ (with the pair of recut 2x bottom counted only as 2 singles) but worth far more than that as a set.  Estimated cash value $2,500-$3,000

Expertization/Extension Policy

Any uncertified (single) stamp that I sell may be placed on "extension" while a certificate of expertization is obtained. In addition, stamps with existing certificates issued prior to January 1, 2015 may be placed on extension for a new certificate. Individual stamps from a larger lot may not be placed on extension, unless prior approval has been obtained. The following procedure must be followed for all extensions:

  • All lots must be paid for in advance and the lot will ship once payment clears. Upon receipt, please examine the item. If you agree with my description but want a certificate, then...
  • You must notify me (preferably at time of purchase) that you are requesting a certificate and we must agree on a 3rd party service (APEX, PF, PSAG and PSE are acceptable) to do the certification. This notification must occur within 7 days of receipt but in no event later than 30 days from the purchase date. The item must be submitted within 7 days of receipt, but in no event later than 30 days from the sale.
  • You submit the item as the rightful owner and pay any certification and postage costs required at that time.

The stamp must not be marked in any way, and must be returned in the original condition (not encapsulated). Express service premiums are not reimbursable. Certificate costs are not refundable if the service cannot render an opinion, or if a graded certificate disagrees with any statement regarding grade or estimated grade.
  • Upon receipt of the returned stamp and certificate, I will credit your account (as defined in (4) above) within 24 hours. You can leave the money on account to apply toward future purchases, or request a refund, in which case funds will be sent within 2 business days.
